Studies on Meningococcal Infection

چکیده
From meningococcus Type II broth autolysates, a substance, corresponding to the protective antibody has been isolated. This substance, termed kappa substance, is firmly connected with protein but can be separated by the action of proteolytic enzymes. Methods of preparation and purification are given, together with chemical and serological data. In whole cells from young cultures, this substance is also connected with protein, especially with one protein fraction which requires highest alkali concentration to effect solution.

متن کاملTransgenic mice expressing human transferrin as a model for meningococcal infection.
The pathogenesis of meningococcal disease is poorly understood due to the lack of a relevant animal model. Moreover, the use of animal models is not optimal as most meningococcal virulence determinants recognize receptors that are specifically expressed in human tissues. One major element of the host specificity is the system of meningococcal iron uptake by transferrin-binding proteins that bin...
متن کاملEffectiveness of vaccinating household contacts in addition to chemoprophylaxis after a case of meningococcal disease: a systematic review.
SUMMARYWe performed a systematic review to estimate the effectiveness of vaccination, in addition to chemoprophylaxis, in preventing meningococcal disease among household contacts. Medline, EMBASE, EMGM, and EUIBIS were used for data collection. Studies reporting on at least 100 primary cases and on subsequent cases in household settings with follow-up of more than 2 weeks after onset of diseas...

METHODS A total of 233 infants and children up to 15 years of age presenting with a non-blanching rash were studied over a period of 12 months. Clinical features and laboratory investigations were recorded at presentation. The ability of e...
